Patton finished a creditable fifth in the competition. Remarkably, it was the shooting element that let him down. In true Patton style he used his militarycal. revolver instead of the lightercal. favored by most of the athletes. Patton was also an expert fencer. He re-wrote the U.S. Army's manuals on swordsmanship, removing the "parry".

      Volume II, which Fox is working on, will encompass the rest of the war. The book could have benefited from more and better maps. Up until now, the best portrait of the 4th Armored Division has been Brig. Gen. Albin Irzyk's he Rode Up Front for Patton. Now, Patton's Vanguard gives a larger, more detailed picture of the 4th, and is well told. Up Front is a phenomenal book about a man in the WW2 fighting but also writing comics about it too. Bill Mauldin makes the book funny and interesting to read. Bill talks about World War 2 and what is happening and how difficult the war is, but he also tells how the men entertain themselves and how they have fun every now and then/5().
